From 1873 to 1881, Judge James B Humphrey served Allegan County as a Probate Court judge.  In the 1870 Allegan Village census, he is listed as 33 years of age, occupation – sawyer, resideing with wife Maggie (27) and children Charles (4) and Fanny (1). [1]

In 1881, Judge Humphrey was appointed to and accepted the post of Deputy Treasurer of the State of Michigan.[2]
