Judge DeWitt C ChapinJudge DeWitt Clinton Chapin was born in Lockport, New york on 28 May 1816, the son of Theodore H & Margaret (Fox) Chapin.  His father was an attorney back east.[1]

Judge Chapin was elected to the Allegan County Probate Court 7 November 1848, serving in that office from 1849 to 1853.  He had previously served as the Allegan County Prosecuting Attorney.[2]

Judge Chapin removed to Gratiot County, Michigan in 1864, settling in the village of Alma, where he passed away while sserving as that county’s Register of Deeds on 29 January 1873.[3]
